Tubing pup joints and the completion depth
Tubing arrives in full joints; a completion depth need not be a multiple of them. Tubing pup joints — short joints made to order — are what closes the gap between the tally of full joints and the depth the design demands.
Within the catalogue's twelve pup joint entries, tubing pup joints are named in their own right alongside the generic pup joint titles. As with casing pup joints, there is no model number to hide behind: a tubing pup joint is specified by the size, grade, EUE or NUE end finish, and length the design names for the string it joins. The company's casing literature confirms tubing pup joints of various sizes can be machined to order.
Specification checklist for tubing pup joints
- Size and weight — as the tubing line, e.g. 2-7/8 in, 6.5 lb/ft.
- Grade — J55, N80, L80, P110 or 13Cr where the string is corrosion-resistant.
- End finish — EUE or NUE, as the design names the finish for the string.
- Lengths and convention — measured overall lengths, stating whether the coupling is included.
- Position in string — where each pup joint sits, if the set is pre-planned against a diagram.
Graded sets are a descending series of short lengths — a stepped series for adjusting the landing in small increments in the last few metres. If the RFQ asks for sets to be marked and packed as sets, in order, the quotation will confirm whether that arrangement can be accepted and in what scope. A single pup joint can also be raised as its own enquiry line — to replace a damaged joint or re-space after a pump change; state the full specification for the replacement, as the design names it for that string.
Perforated neighbours and crossover junctions
One neighbour belongs in this conversation. A perforated sub — a tubing pup joint with a drilled port pattern — appears on some completion diagrams where flow must enter or circulate at a specific point. It is not a catalogue product here and it is not interchangeable with a plain pup joint: raise it as its own enquiry line with its pattern drawing, and ask for its availability to be confirmed in the quotation. And where a completion changes tubing size — above a pump, for instance — the junction is a crossover, not a pup joint. Keep these parts distinct on the RFQ, and state any packing separation you need in the enquiry.
Are tubing pup joints held in stock, or made to order?
Pup joints are made to order in the string's size — state the size on your completion diagram in the enquiry.
Can pup joints be supplied in 13Cr?
Where the string is 13Cr, its pup joints should be too. The 13Cr series lists tubing sizes from 2-3/8 in to 4-1/2 in; state the grade with the size so the order follows the corrosion-resistant programme.
How are lengths marked?
State the marking you need — including your tally convention, overall including coupling or pipe only — in the enquiry; the quotation will confirm whether it can be accepted and in what scope.
Request a Quotation
Send your size, grade, thread and quantity. MOQ, packing and lead time are confirmed in the quotation for your exact specification — no generic promise replaces a written quote.
