Pup Joints — Short Lengths That Make the String Fit

Twelve catalogue entries of pup joints: the short casing and tubing lengths that let a string land exactly where the completion design puts the pump, packer or perforating guns.

What a pup joint is for

A pup joint is a short length of casing or tubing — shorter than a standard Range 1, 2 or 3 joint — used to adjust the total length of a string. Completions are designed to a depth: a pump must sit in the right part of the curve, a packer must land opposite a competent interval, perforating guns must face the pay zone. Standard joints may not add up to exactly that depth; where they do not, the difference between the standard-joint total and the design depth is made up with pup joints in the lengths the tally calls for. Perforated subs — tubing pup joints with a drilled port pattern — are not a catalogue product here; raise them as an enquiry topic with your pattern drawing, and ask for availability against the drawing to be confirmed in the quotation.

The company's catalogue lists twelve pup joint entries under generic titles, without splitting them into twelve different models. The twelve entries sit in two sub-families — tubing pup joints and casing pup joints — not twelve different products. A pup joint order states, for the string it joins, the outside diameter, weight or wall, grade, and thread and coupling form the design names for that string, in the lengths your space-out requires. Send the string list and the target landing depth, and state the lengths as a set rather than as a single arbitrary short joint.

The perforated pattern is the one request in this family that the catalogue does not list as a product. Where a completion design calls for a drilled port pattern, treat it as an enquiry item: send the drawing or a written pattern description with the string specification, and ask for the pattern's machinability and its basis to be confirmed in the quotation. Hole count, diameter and placement belong to the completion design — which is why a perforated pattern is raised with its drawing.

How pup joints are specified and made

The company's casing product literature states that casing and tubing pup joints of various sizes can be machined to order, alongside reverse-thread and premium-thread couplings. Whether each joint is marked with its measured length is an enquiry item: state it in the RFQ, and the quotation will confirm whether it can be accepted and in what scope. When you order, give lengths as measured overall lengths and state whether the figure includes the coupling.

State them as a set in the RFQ, with the lengths your tally calls for. If your tally needs sets packed and marked as sets, in string order, state the set logic in the RFQ; the quotation will confirm whether that packing and marking arrangement can be accepted and in what scope.

Pup joints in the yard: small pipe, strict identity

Identity is part of the product here: if your tally needs the measured length marked on the joint, the grade and thread form in the marking, protectors on both ends, or sets bundled in string order, state that marking layout, set bundling and protector type in the enquiry, and ask for them to be confirmed for the order in the quotation. The same discipline is why a pup joint order should never be written by nickname or by photo: a pup joint order is a string specification plus a length.

One more practical point is worth building into the order. State the set in the RFQ — target depth, the full-joint tally you expect to run, and the adjustment range you want the set to cover.

How short can a pup joint be?

Practical minimums depend on diameter and thread form, because two threaded ends and a handling allowance must fit in the length. Give your target lengths and ask for the shortest makeable length for that size and connection to be confirmed in the quotation.

Are pup joints the same grade as the string?

State the grade, weight and thread of the string they join on the RFQ line, as your tally names them for that line. If you need a different grade for a specific interval, state it explicitly in the enquiry; the quotation will confirm whether separate marking and documentation for that interval can be accepted and in what scope.

Can one order mix casing and tubing pup joints?

Yes, as separate lines on one RFQ. They belong to different strings, so list them as separate lines and state any separate packing you need in the enquiry; the quotation will confirm whether it can be accepted and in what scope, and will price the families line by line.

Request a Quotation

Send your size, grade, thread and quantity. MOQ, packing and lead time are confirmed in the quotation for your exact specification — no generic promise replaces a written quote.

Documents: if your tender needs certificates, inspection records or a stated PSL level, note it in the message — documents are quoted with the order, not added afterwards.
