What integral means, and when a design names it
Pup joints come in two constructions. A coupled pup joint is a short pipe length used with a separate coupling, exactly like a short standard joint. An integral pup joint is machined from one piece of mother pipe with its threaded ends formed directly on the joint — there is no separate coupling component in the middle of the assembly. Integral is an industry construction term for this one-piece form. The catalogue's pup joint family — twelve entries across casing and tubing patterns — does not list the integral construction as a separate product: ask whether it can be machined for a given size and thread form, per enquiry, in the written quotation.
The space-out job does not change with construction: the pup joint still exists to land the string on depth, in the lengths the enquiry states. What changes is the hardware count and the inspection focus. An integral joint's threads are cut on the joint itself — there is no separate coupling component in the assembly. State protectors for the two ends on the order, and state whether lengths are to be marked as measured overall lengths.
Integral versus coupled, honestly compared
| Point | Integral pup joint | Coupled pup joint |
|---|---|---|
| Construction | One piece; ends formed on the joint | Short joint plus separate coupling |
| Mid-assembly connection | None | One coupling make-up |
| If a thread end is damaged | No separate coupling component in the assembly | A separate coupling component is present |
| Best suited to | Where the design names the one-piece form | Space-out where the design names the coupled form |
| Ordering note | Confirm integral availability per size/form first | Confirm coupled availability per size/form first |
Neither construction is universally better. Integral joints are an enquiry-led option for designs that name the one-piece form. What is not acceptable is ambiguity: an order that says only pup joint, 6 ft, leaves the construction to chance. State integral explicitly, with size, grade, thread form and measured length, and ask for the construction to be confirmed for your specification in the quotation.
Specifying integral pup joints
Send the string specification the joint must match — outside diameter, weight or wall, grade, thread form — plus the measured lengths required and whether lengths are pin-to-shoulder or overall. If the integral joint sits between completion components, name them in the enquiry. Ask for MOQ, packing and lead time to be confirmed in the written quotation for the construction the enquiry states.
Does the catalogue list integral pup joints as a product?
No. The twelve pup joint entries are named by pattern — pup joint, tubing pup joint, casing pup joint — without separating integral from coupled construction. Raise the size, grade and thread in the enquiry, and ask for feasibility for them to be confirmed in writing in the quotation.
Can integral pup joints be made in premium threads?
Premium thread processing is part of the factory programme. An integral joint in a premium form is a specific machining instruction — raise it in the enquiry with the connection name, and ask for its machining to be confirmed in the quotation.
What lengths should I order?
State the lengths your own tally arithmetic calls for, as a set, in the enquiry.
Request a Quotation
Send your size, grade, thread and quantity. MOQ, packing and lead time are confirmed in the quotation for your exact specification — no generic promise replaces a written quote.
