STC, LTC and BTC Threads — The Three API Casing Forms, Explained

API casing threads come in three standard forms: round threads in two lengths, and the buttress. Alongside them sit premium gas-tight connections.

Three forms, one job — done differently

Casing threads must do two things at once: hold the string together under its hanging weight and internal pressure, and seal well enough for the interval's duty. API practice answers with three standard forms. STC — short thread casing — is a round thread with a short coupling engagement. LTC — long thread casing — is the same round thread philosophy with a longer coupling and more engaged threads. BTC — buttress thread casing — abandons the round profile for a near-square buttress tooth. All three are threaded, gauged and inspected under API 5CT with 5B; the thread forms and the casing size list — 4-1/2 in to 20 in — are published as separate lists, neither mapped onto the other, and the choice between them is made per string section by the casing design.

Round threads: STC and LTC

The API round thread is a V-form thread with rounded roots and crests, tapered so that make-up wedges pin and box together. Its sealing depends on that interference plus thread compound filling the spiral leak path inherent in the form. STC uses the short coupling, with fewer engaged threads. LTC lengthens the coupling and the engagement within the same thread philosophy. The design states which round form each section takes. When a design simply says round thread, the STC-versus-LTC question is answered by the coupling length the loads require: state the form your design settles on in the enquiry, so the quotation confirms that form for the line, because the two couplings are not interchangeable on the same pin programme without checking the pin thread length specified.

Buttress: BTC

The catalogue's stock entries include a 13-3/8 in P110 BTC casing coupling — the form named there is BTC. Its sealing still relies on interference and dope. The catalogue lists BTC among the API thread forms, and lists premium connections separately, as its gas-tight family.

Choosing per section

Choosing per section is a naming exercise before it is a purchasing one. For each section of the string, the design names two things: the thread form — STC, LTC, BTC or a premium connection — and the grade, taken from the published list. No typical pairing of a form or a grade to a section is published. Pup joints and couplings for a section are stated on their own lines, with the form and grade the design names for that section. And because form and grade are per-section decisions, the RFQ must state both per line; casing pipe with thread or grade unspecified leaves both per-section decisions unstated. The published coupling stock sizes run 1.315, 1.66, 1.9, 2-3/8, 2-7/8, 3-1/2, 4 and 4-1/2 in.

Gauging and the field reality

Gauging discipline applies to all three forms alike. Thread dimensions and tolerances for this factory's couplings are stated to follow API Spec 5CT and 5B. Neither tolerates the universal sins — protectors left off in the yard, threads dragged through mud, couplings mixed between forms because the diameters matched. State the form on the enquiry line, and ask for the coupling marking you need to be confirmed in the quotation for that line.

Reading a thread specification like an inspector

A thread form named on a purchase order names a geometry and its gauging practice. STC is the short coupling and the round profile; BTC is the buttress tooth, its distinctive flank and its own gauges, and thread dimensions and tolerances follow API Spec 5CT and 5B practice. Spell the form identically on the RFQ and the order line, so that the quotation answers against the same form the design names. Abbreviations drift in correspondence (buttress becomes BT, long round becomes LC in one legacy system) and every drift is a small opportunity for a wrong coupling to be certified as right. The three forms have exactly three standard names; use them, in full, every time.

Coupling length is the visible part of the same discipline. STC and LTC share the round thread form; the two are told apart by coupling length — the short coupling belongs to the STC line, the long coupling to the LTC line. Put that check in the enquiry: state the goods-in comparison your receiving will run — form against the order line, coupling length against the form, mark against the tally, protectors in place — and that disagreements are to be resolved from the documents before the string is scheduled, not at the rack, so the quotation can confirm that receiving basis for the order.

Make-up practice follows the gauging and handling requirements for the form: ask for the requirements that apply to the form you name in the enquiry, and the quotation states them for the order. Marking and surface treatment are published for the coupling entries: phosphating inside and out, magnetic-particle inspection, and marking to API 5CT. A protective coating for the coupling entries is also named in the same published text, applied on request where the order states it.

State the form your design settles on, per section and per line, in the enquiry.

Can STC and LTC couplings be mixed on one string?

They are different coupling lengths within round-thread practice and are not treated as interchangeable on an order. The design names one form per section; order, mark and run that form.

Is BTC gas-tight?

No sealing rating for the API forms is published here, BTC included: the catalogue lists BTC as the buttress load form of the three API forms, and lists premium connections separately as its gas-tight family. A named pattern's sealing performance is confirmed against its own documentation in the quotation.

Request a Quotation

Send your size, grade, thread and quantity. MOQ, packing and lead time are confirmed in the quotation for your exact specification — no generic promise replaces a written quote.

Documents: if your tender needs certificates, inspection records or a stated PSL level, note it in the message — documents are quoted with the order, not added afterwards.
